There was a collective gasp.

As our Travelmarvel coach rounded the final bend and the majestic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise came into view, I wasn't the only one thinking the same thing: How is this even real?

Mind you, our eyes had already been treated to some of the Canadian Rockies' greatest hits. We'd wandered the charming streets of Canmore, met the rescued wolf dogs at the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, and stood in awe of the impossibly blue waters of Moraine Lake after climbing the famous Rockpile Trail. We'd even spotted cheeky little chipmunks darting between the rocks.

Surely nothing could top a day like that.

And then we arrived.

This is what Travelmarvel does so brilliantly. Just when you think you've reached the highlight, another unforgettable experience comes along. It's not just about ticking off famous sights. It's about those insider moments that stop you in your tracks and become the memories you'll still be talking about years later.

The arrival itself couldn't have been easier. Before we'd even stepped off the coach, a Fairmont staff member welcomed us aboard and handed out our room keys. Within minutes I was in my beautifully appointed room, ready to explore one of the world's most iconic hotels.

Perched right on the shores of Lake Louise, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise enjoys what has to be one of the most enviable locations in Canada. Thousands of people visit the lake every day, yet staying here means you experience it differently. You have the luxury of stepping outside whenever you choose, whether it's first thing in the morning before the crowds arrive or in the peaceful evening light after many day visitors have left.

Of course, I'd seen countless photos of Lake Louise before visiting. It's one of the most photographed places on earth. But no image prepares you for seeing it with your own eyes.

In a world of heavily edited social media feeds and enhanced travel photos, it was almost surreal to discover that the vibrant turquoise water really is that blue.

The colours are every bit as extraordinary as you've imagined.

I spent hours wandering the lakefront, and if you're lucky enough to stay here, I have a few recommendations. Walk beyond the main viewing area along the lakeside trail to the right of the hotel for quieter vantage points. Take the Fairview Lookout Trail for a breathtaking bird's-eye perspective across the lake. Find one of the perfectly positioned Adirondack chairs and simply sit for a while. Or treat yourself to a cocktail on the terrace at the famous Lakeview Lounge while soaking up one of the best views in the Rockies.

My own evening ended beside one of the hotel's outdoor fire pits, sipping an espresso martini as the mountains reflected across the lake, before returning to my room to relax in the fluffiest white robe imaginable.

It was the perfect end to an incredible day.

As I looked across the water one last time before heading to bed, I was already doing the maths on how soon I could come back.

Some places really do live up to the hype.

Lake Louise is one of them.
