Places you didn’t know you need to go
Serbia
If Belgrade wasn't at the top of your travel list before, maybe it should be. Known for it's vibrant music and arts scene, Serbia’s capital is a must-visit for your next European Tour. If you have a moment to spare between visiting the beautiful museums and excellent shopping, make sure to take a turn down Skadarlija, the bohemian street where the locals sing and dance until dawn and duck into a “kafanas”, a traditional Serbian tavern, for fresh coffee and ćevapi.
Further down the Danube, history and culture collide at the Iron Gates, an imposing gorge at the border of Serbia and Romania. Enjoy a tick list of fascinating sights as your cruise along the river, including a lone cross stood atop the 1,000ft cliffs, a precariously placed monastery and of course the face of Roman Hero Decebalus carved into stone.
One thing is for certain, when it comes to hidden gems - Serbia is your first port of call.
Sorrento, Italy
Nestled on the southern coast of Italy is the picture-perfect town of Sorrento.
Let the sweet citrus scent of the regions famous limoncello liqueur lead you through the lively village streets, through narrow lanes, towards the quaint restaurants and bars, which offer stunning sweeping views along the coast. After an appropriately long lunch, make like the Italians and while away the warm afternoons exploring Sorrento’s charming churches, hidden gardens, and iconic doorways.
Sensō-ji temple, Tokyo
If you visit one temple in Tokyo, make sure it is Sensō-ji.
The city’s oldest temple, Sensō-ji is dedicated to the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who’s statue was rumoured to been found in the nearby Sumida river by two fishermen in 628AD. Both inside and outside the temple you will find classic Japanese-Buddhist features, from traditional lanterns to a copy of the Lotus Sutra scripture.
The surrounding tourist attractions are also well worth a visit for a curious traveller, including the iconic Thunder Gate, Kaminarimon, a grand archway covered with Buddhist statues and the Nakamise shopping street, selling everything from folding fans to local snacks.
Ketchikan, Alaska
Set at the southernmost entrance to the Alaska's famous inside passage is Ketchikan. Known for three things; idyllic scenery, feisty salmon and Native Alaskan Culture.
As soon as you arrive in this small but mighty city you will learn why.
A must-do on your visit to Ketchikan is wander down Mission Street to the picturesque boardwalk path lined with colourful stilted houses. For budding photographers, Creek Street is a delight, home to quaint art galleries, gift shops, bookstores, and restaurants.
Ketchikan also has the largest number of totem poles in Alaska, with some poles dated as more than 100 years old. Admire the skills of local native artists, who tell the stories of their village through wood carving. Looking at the totems you might be able to recognise some the many animals, mammals and forests that surround the city beautifully portrayed in wood.
Sapa, Vietnam
You probably haven’t heard of Sapa, Vietnam, but you have almost definitely seen a photo of it. Known for its magnificent rice terraces, there are few towns more photogenic than this one.
Still populated by a small, traditional community, the locals’ lives have remained relatively unchanged by the passing decades; rice fields are still tended and harvested the same way they have been for centuries, and men, women and children wear their culture with pride daily, in the form of vibrant, embroidered clothing.
On a Travelmarvel tour, you will have the chance to visit the local market, where talented traders from the Dzao, Han, Xa Fang, Tay and Thai tribes sell their beautiful handicrafts (with some good-natured haggling of course!). There are also no shortage of cultural experiences to enjoy, from sampling the fresh local food, to taking in the view of Mount Fansipan from a hillside village…will two days be enough?
