Having worked in travel for nearly 20 years, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting some incredible destinations, yet Peru still managed to surprise me. From the moment I arrived, I could sense the lingering whispers of pre-Columbian civilisations like the Inca Empire, which spanned from Ecuador to Santiago in the 16th century. In a place that feels vast and at times elusive, Travelmarvel provided the thoughtful structure and support that takes a journey from simply enjoyable to truly enriching.  

The highlights on my trip were countless. The Sacred Valley remains one of my favourite stops. This fertile heartland, adorned with terraced hillsides and winding rivers, is a living testament to Peru’s enduring agricultural traditions. Cusco, the former Inca capital, captivated me with its blend of Spanish colonial facades, Inca architecture, labyrinthine streets, and bustling markets where the Inca Quechua language is still spoken.  

Visiting Lake Titicaca, too, was a long-held dream come true: its expansive, shimmering waters and the remarkable floating reed islands created by the Indigenous Uros added a serene contrast to the rugged Andes. And of course, Machu Picchu exceeded every expectation: watching the morning mist lift over the ancient citadel was a deeply moving moment I’ll carry with me forever.  

Peru also indulged my palate. I fell in love with ceviche – fresh fish marinated in lime juice, paired with red onion, corn and tender sweet potato. Born along Peru’s coastal regions, this iconic dish has become a culinary touchstone across South America.
