The beautiful landscapes of the Douro river in Portugal.

Three Dreamy Destinations to Discover on a Douro River Cruise

Terraced vineyards cling to craggy mountains as the Douro carves its course through rolling hills peppered with olive groves, cork oak and pine. Here, the towns are sleepy and the castles centuries old, while life is characterised by an unhurried ease. From the striking Mateus Palace to the laidback village of Pinhão, Portugal’s scenic Douro Valley is teeming with scenes fit for the front of any postcard — and a Douro River Cruise brings you right into the heart of these picturesque places. Discover three dreamy destinations you’ll want to write home about on a voyage through this idyllic region.

Mateus Palace

There’s every chance your first encounter with this 18th-century baroque palace was on the label of Mateus Rosé, a well-loved tipple that has been a staple of dinner parties and celebrations alike since 1942. Founded by Fernando van Zeller Guedes during the height of World War II — with the distinctive bottle shape modelled on the canteens carried by soldiers — Mateus is a symbol of Portuguese wine across the globe.

Guedes secured permission from the owner to use the Mateus name and palace on the wine label, initially offering a share of every bottle sold. However, the palace owner instead opted for a one-time lump sum. With over 40 million bottles sold annually at the brand’s peak in the 1970s, this decision is often regarded as one of history’s biggest business blunders.

As you wind down the path from the entrance gate, you’re greeted by a spectacular scene: the dramatic facades of the manor house and chapel framed by chestnut and oak trees. A lake — built in the 1950s to reflect the complex — creates a striking mirror, where architecture and nature meet in perfect symmetry. Grand baroque design is complemented by equally impressive gardens, among their highlights are a tunnel of over 80 Mexican cedars spanning almost 40 metres, and skilfully manicured labyrinths of boxwood hedges. This spectacle of grandeur is impossible to forget.

Entre-os-Rios

Entre-os-Rios — meaning between the rivers — is a peaceful village set at the confluence of the Douro and Tâmega. This striking natural landscape is characterised by calm waters and rolling hills dotted with cork oak and maritime pine that stretch as far as the eye can see. Surrounded by cascading vineyards and traditional quintas, this authentic village captures the essence of the Douro: timeless beauty, rural charm, and a sense of deep connection to the land.

Steeped in history, the village is home to storied landmarks such as the Church of Saint Michael of Entre-os-Rios. Dating back to the 11th century, the church was built during the Christian Reconquest of the Douro Valley, blending Romanesque and Gothic styles.

River beaches — known as praias fluviais in Portuguese — can also be found around Entre-os-Rios. Surrounded by woods and mountains, these peaceful sandy beaches offer a reprieve during simmering Portuguese summers. Spend long days by the riverside like a local, sunbathing, swimming and picnicking as you’re immersed in the spectacular landscapes of the Douro.

Pinhão

Nestled amid lush mountains covered in cascading vineyards that stretch in every direction, Pinhão is a quintessential Portuguese town. As a hub of Port wine production, the town is set in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region — the world’s first officially regulated wine region, established in 1756.

Surrounding vineyards form part of the Alto Douro Wine Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shaped by over 2,000 years of winemaking. Home to wine estates with centuries of history, Pinhão is the perfect place to experience the Portuguese lifestyle, savouring traditional cuisine and regional wines at a local quinta. Relish the velvety sweetness of a tawny Port as you take in vistas of the Douro snaking between age-old vineyards and olive trees.

Pinhão’s famous railway station equally radiates Portuguese charm, adorned with 3,024 classic blue-and-white azulejo tiles arranged in 24 panels, each hand-painted to depict the region’s long-standing history of viticulture. Scenes of grape harvest to rabelo boats — traditional wooden vessels historically used to transport barrels of Port along the river — create a fascinating open-air gallery that tells the story of the Douro Valley. Travellers often stop here just to photograph the tiles.
