Hungarian State Opera House
A Sneak Peek behind the Curtain

Nikki Explores Budapest’s Opera House

While travelling as a guest with Travelmarvel, stylist and travel enthusiast Nikki Parkinson enjoyed an exclusive preview of our most exciting new Insider Experience for 2026 – and let’s just say it hit all the right notes!

As part of her European adventure, Nikki stepped behind the scenes of the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest – freshly reopened after a massive six-year renovation. From grand marble staircases to glittering chandeliers, it’s every bit as glamorous as you’d imagine.

Included in Travelmarvel’s European Gems River Cruise itinerary from 2026, this exclusive experience gives guests the chance to soak up all the drama and beauty of one of Europe’s most iconic performance halls – without the crowds.

Star of the Show

Designed by the celebrated 19th-century architect Miklós Ybl, a leading figure in Hungarian architecture, the Budapest Opera House is a striking example of Neo-Renaissance design. Construction began in 1875 and took nearly a decade to complete, with the grand opening taking place in 1884. Over the decades, the Opera House became a proud symbol of Hungary’s rich cultural identity and artistic spirit, hosting world-famous performances and dazzling audiences for more than a century.

The recent restoration has taken the venue back to its former glory, with every fresco, gold leaf, and velvet seat polished to perfection. But perhaps the most impressive part, the successful restoration the original acoustics, including the sound-reflecting ceiling that gives the hall its signature, spine-tingling sound.

A Night to Remember

As part of Travelmarvel’s 2026 Insider Experience, guests will get to enjoy a private guided tour of the Opera House – complete with a glass of champagne in hand. To top it off, the evening includes a recital of opera arias on the grand staircase, an intimate moment surrounded by pure elegance.

Nikki had the chance to experience it all firsthand, and she was completely enchanted. Stepping into the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest is like stepping into the golden age of Budapest." she said "The building which opened in 1884 was recently refurbished and is stunning at every turn. Sitting in one of the boxes felt like a front row to a big part of Hungary’s social and cultural history. How special to be treated to a private opera performance!”
